Mesothelioma Awareness Day—September 26, 2009

September 25, 2009 — Mesothelioma, a deadly asbestos cancer, casts its pall over approximately 2,000 to 3,000 Americans every year. On Saturday, September 26, 2009, the 4th Annual Mesothelioma Awareness Day will be honored across the country driven by the efforts of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF or Meso Foundation).

“Let’s Rock”—Radio Campaign Designed to Bring Mesothelioma Awareness Across America

Across the country, radio waves will be filled with the music of Warren Zevon who died from mesothelioma in 2003. Warren’s son, Jordon Zevon, who works closely with the Meso Foundation to raise awareness about this deadly asbestos disease, recorded a bumper for radio stations to run following his father’s songs.

Besides encouraging people to take part by encouraging their local radio station to participate, the Meso Foundation is also encouraging everyone to make Mesothelioma Awareness Day an official event in their city, state and the country. There is a map on their site showing which cities and states have made an official declaration designating September 26th as Mesothelioma Awareness Day. Rep. Betty McCollum (D–MN) will be introducing the following resolution into the United States Congress to declare the 26th as Mesothelioma Awareness Day:

“Each year 3,000 or more Americans develop Mesothelioma, a deadly form of cancer linked to exposure to asbestos that affects millions of Americans. Millions of Americans are exposed to asbestos, including military personnel and approximately 1.3 million employees on the job in construction and general industry, according to OSHA. Asbestos–related diseases usually do not manifest themselves until decades after a person is exposed to asbestos fibers but then develop rapidly. Most patients with mesothelioma die within one year of being diagnosed.”

If you would like to become involved, the Meso Foundation has an Action Center listing their current efforts to bring asbestos awareness to the nation and legislative bodies.
