MARF’s International Symposium — Three Days Dedicated to Helping Those Affected by Mesothelioma
The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF) will hold its International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma (ISMM) 2008 on June 26–June 28 at the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill, in Washington, D.C. Leading experts on malignant mesothelioma will be attending the event, as well as mesothelioma patients and families, physicians, researchers and mesothelioma advocates. Together, they will share the latest trends in research, clinical trials and treatments for the disease. Mesothelioma, is a rare cancer linked almost exclusively to asbestos exposure that affects the lining of the lungs, chest, abdominal cavity or the heart.
This annual event will offer psychological support and advocacy to those who are fighting mesothelioma, or have lost someone to the disease. Outreach topics at ISMM include fundraising, and opportunities to volunteer to help make a difference. There will be an education program covering topics such as Scientific Advances in Mesothelioma Research, Peritoneal Mesothelioma, Emerging Therapies, Optimizing Patient Care, and Pleural Mesothelioma Surgical Options.
Advocacy, Research and Community Are the Focus for the Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma
The first day will focus on putting pressure on the House of Representatives to pass legislation to ban asbestos in the United States, and provide research funding for mesothelioma and asbestos–related diseases. Also on the agenda, Symposium advocates will request that the Senate’s Defense Appropriations Subcommittee ensure mesothelioma remains eligible for medical research funding from the Department of Defense. The focus of the second day will be on science, featuring a panel of world renowned experts on mesothelioma. The evening will include a dinner, awards and guest speakers. The last day will be dedicated to the community of mesothelioma patients, families and caregivers.
What started as a purely scientific event in the past has now become much more. “Initially, these people would come and sit in on these high–level presentations by scientists, with very technical presentations. We saw the interest and our meeting has now evolved into more of a patient meeting, the scientists speak in more layman’s terms, and we’ve added programs to reach out to people who are also interested in the community of support and the activism that takes place,” said Rob Grayson, director of marketing for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. Scholarships for ISMM registration fees, as well as for transportation and accommodations, are still available for patients, family members and caregivers who would like to attend. Contact the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation through their website or call 805–563–8400 for details.
