Giving Mesothelioma Patients a Lift to Treatment With the Mesothelioma Foundation’s Travel Grant Program
March 7, 2008 — Following a long tradition of advocacy for mesothelioma patients and their families, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) has established the Mary and Bob Cosentino Travel Grant Program. The Travel Grant Program will help connect newly–diagnosed mesothelioma patients with experts on mesothelioma treatment options across the nation.
Mesothelioma, a deadly type of cancer resulting from exposure to asbestos, causes tumors to grow on the lining of the lungs, abdominal cavity and heart. Unfortunately, research to understand mesothelioma and develop new mesothelioma treatments lags far behind research on other types of cancer. Consequently, mesothelioma treatment is often experimental, expensive, and hard to find. There are only a small number of medical centers that specialize in mesothelioma treatment. Many mesothelioma patients and their families do not live near these mesothelioma treatment centers and cannot afford the travel and lodging costs. The Travel Grant Program will help mesothelioma patients with these costs, helping them to consult with mesothelioma experts outside the area where they live.
The Meso Foundation provides patients and families with information on mesothelioma treatments, clinical trials and medical referrals through its full time mesothelioma nurse practitioner and the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation’s website.
