Hawaiian Researchers Encouraged to Apply for Grants In the Fight Against Cancer
February 13, 2008 — Two featured speakers, Dr. Donella Wilson of the American Cancer Society (ACS), and Dr. Michele Carbone, a leading mesothelioma researcher, recently spoke at a conference in Hawaii, urging Hawaiian researchers to apply for research grants to aid in the fight against cancer. According to Dr. Wilson, director of research promotion and communication at the ACS, cancer is the number one cause of death for native Hawaiian women, and researchers may use the available grants as an opportunity to help in the fight to find a cure for this deadly disease.
Dr. Michele Carbone, director of thoracic oncology at the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii and Pathology Department chairman at the medical school, credits the success of his career, including being a leading researcher of mesothelioma, to when he received a grant of $1 million from the ACS. Additionally, Carbone and his research team are currently given more than half of all federal mesothelioma and asbestos research funding.
