Vinorelbine May Aid in Treatment of Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma Clinical Trial with Vinorelbine:

January 12, 2001 — The chemotherapy agent vinorelbine may aid in treating symptoms of malignant pleural mesothelioma, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. Twenty–nine patients with pleural mesothelioma were given weekly dosages of vinorelbine in six–week cycles. After receiving a median average of 12 injections, seven patients showed partial responses to the drug. The disease remained stable in 16 patients, but progressed in six patients.

Analysis showed pain reduction and an improvement in the quality of life for some pleural mesothelioma patients. The authors of the study pointed out that vinorelbine had a relatively low toxicity and mild side–effects. They suggested that it might be combined with other agents for testing purposes.

Vinorelbine has previously been used in the treatment of non–small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, and ovarian carcinoma. A common brand name of vinorelbine is Navelbine.
